We’ve been talking a lot about starting an Online Boutique but what I felt was missing in all those discussions was talking about how much it really costs to start an Online Boutique.
We’ve all had people around or seen them on facebook that has started their Online Boutiques and doing well, but because you find it too rude to ask or are too afraid to hear the answer and know how much they really spent on building up their boutique, here’s a breakdown for you.
Starting an Online Boutique can be overwhelming and then having to guess how much it will cost or building up imaginary figures in your mind that reach thousands of $$$ stops a lot of babes from getting started.
**For the purpose of this blog, I’m going to work with Etsy, Shopify, Squarespace & Prestashop.
How Much Does It Cost To Start An Online Boutique?
Let’s start with the basics –
➕ Business Registration – Business Reg. is different in every state and country. In Australia, to start a business as a sole proprietor costs $0. All you’ve got to do is register your business under your name and apply for ABN. If you are in the US or any other part of the world, check out your state laws and alter the business cost accordingly.
➕ Domain – Along with the website, comes the cost of a domain.
- Etsy – You don’t need a domain when selling on Etsy. You use the website URL along with your store name.
- Squarespace – You get a free custom domain when you sign up for the annual version.
- For both Shopify & Prestashop, you need to buy a domain to link or build your Boutique on.
➕ Next in line, Hosting. When running a website or boutique, you need to store files like pictures on your boutique website and hence you require hosting. Godaddy also has hosting plans that you can sign up for along with the domain to set up your website.
For Etsy, Shopify or Squarespace you don’t need to buy any hosting. However, for Prestashop, you will need hosting to set up and run your online boutique.
➕ Website or Platform – There are numerous platforms on the internet today you can leverage for the purpose of starting your Online Boutique. From free platforms like Etsy, eBay, Tictail etc. to paid platforms like Shopify, Squarespace, WordPress and more you can choose one on the basis of how much you want to spend on a monthly or annual basis and how much coding knowledge you have.
Once you have the domain & hosting (if required), next is to finalize the right platform. It’s important to pick a platform that matches your pocket, is easy to navigate & allows you to sell the products you want to. Check out my previous blog post where I talk more about – How to Choose the Right Platform for your Online Boutique.
Budget – Let’s add everything together to see what the startup cost
would be for each platform (mentioned above) –
|Etsy||Shopify||Squarespace||Squarespace + Shopify||Prestashop*|
*Apart from Prestashop, all the cost above is calculated on per month basis. Prestashop fees is an annual cost which will increase a bit year 2 onwards as the cost of domain & hosting would change to normal prices instead of the special offer.
Starting a Boutique Online incurs a lot of overhead expenses if done in the traditional wholesaling way, and creating an Online Boutique shouldn’t add more $$ to it. Rather it should be cheaper and affordable so you have one less thing to worry about.
